I can’t help but notice that the layout is not very “mobile-friendly” – the page is too wide, the text is too small, and it is really a pain to navigate.

Good thing I stumbled upon this plugin called WPtouch, that serves another version of your site with something that mobile users will really appreciate.

This is how the site looks like when viewed in a mobile browser:

Pretty neat right?

(And if you wonder how I took the snapshot, download Screen Capture Shortcut Free. Yes it’s free. No root required.)

This timezone issue of my Samsung Galaxy Y Pro (running on Android Gingerbread) is really frustrating and irritating me. The main issue? The system is utterly confused on what time to use: the GMT time, or the local time.

1.) Per factory setting, the time is local time, set to GMT. Fine, doesn’t bother me at all. If you will overlook the fact that Gtalk has the conversation order in mayhem, and the fact that posting on Facebook via the app tells you that you posted a minute ago was in fact posted “8 hours ago”. The Gtalk conversation stream seems logical: display all the messages between the two of you, and order by time sent in increasing order. Assuming the time stamps (or timezones) are correct.

2.) I guesed that it is only a matter of setting my timezone to the proper one (GMT+8 in my case). I did it via Settings > Date & Time > Select Timezone > GMT+8. Now things are becoming exciting.

3.) The time on the upper righthand corner tells of the LOCAL time. So far so good.

4.) The time widget however displays the GMT time! Say whut? My phone now displays two diferent times in one single screen. I will get a screenshot for this after I learn how to do that

5.) Gchat now works flawlessly. And the Facebook app also gets its time right. These apps uses the local time.

6.) SMS messages use the GMT time?! It now breaks the order with previous sms to one person, which used to use local tine as reference. In effect, the replies are seen first, before the comments! Talk about time traveling and causality.

7.) The standby screen where you swipe your pattern to get in displays the (oh Jeez) GMT time.

8.) The weather widget is ther worst. It displays the local time on its analog display, but displays the GMT time as label. (Roll eyes)

I think the timezone programming for this version of Android is pretty messed up. Do you experience the same thing and feel my sentiments? Shout them out in my comments form below!

Update: now everything is working smooth as silk! The only thing I have to do is open the Samsung Apps application, and it updates samsung related stuff. Everything is shiny now!

When creating a plug-in, especially when you are planning to host it at http://wordpress.com, it is a must that you put a screenshot into the plug-in.

Having a screenshot in a plug-in makes it very easy to see whether it fits the user’s needs or not. As per experience, when I search for a plug-in that, say for example, displays and processes a contact form, I first see whether there is a screenshot, then I can see immediately if it is the “one” or not that I look for, for the project. Is it implemented as a widget? As a shortcode perhaps? Is the interface options easy and user-friendly, or powerful and comprehensive? Each project might need a different implementation, usability, or modifiability, and boy there are lots of plug-ins to choose from!

Maybe the take away here is that the users do not have all the time in the world to install your plug-in to see if it is the right one. If you do not have a screenshot, chances are your plug-in will be easily be bypassed, no matter how good it is, nor how wonderfully crafted you made your description.

A picture paints a thousand code (to misquote a cliche), so use this fact to your advantage.

From the WordPress Codex:

On December 12, 2011, WordPress Version 3.3, named for Sonny Stitts, was released to the public. For more information on this major release, read the WordPress Blog.

There seems to be interesting changes in the system (at least on paper). I still have not tried it, but here are some changes that caught my attention:

a Drag-and-Drop Media Uploader – that’s nice, some candy for the end user.

a wp_editor() method that invokes the TineMYC editor – been doing this for quite some time by reverse engineering WordPress admin. I used to use the tinyMCE.init() javascript method for this purpose.

Don’t lose widgets when switching themes – now this is progress. This annoys me to no end, having to drag and reposition widgets when the theme is changed.

I will update this site in the near (but still undated) future, and will record any difficulties I encounter with the update.

While deploying Tim Thumb on PHP 5.3.5 to create the images with appropriate size for the image gallery of www.ardeearam.com, I have stumbled upon a bug, where it says “Could not find the internal image you specified”, even though I am pretty sure that the image is in the right location. Here are the details of the bug, and the steps needed to fix that bug.

This is an exact copy of the bug report that I filed at http://code.google.com/p/timthumb/issues/detail?id=281

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install timthumb.php on a PHP 5.3.5 installation for Windows
2. Run timthumb.php?src=myimage.png
3. “Could not find the internal image you specified”

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected input: display the image
What I see instead:
A TimThumb error has occured
The following error(s) occured:

Could not find the internal image you specified.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
TimThumb version : 2.8.2

Please provide any additional information below.

The root cause is this:
Line 834: $real = realpath($base . $src);
Line 835: if(stripos($real, $this->docRoot) === 0){

In XAMMP 1.7.4 on Windows running PHP 5.3.5, the realpath method returns a path with backslash separated, instead of forward slashes. $this->docRoot is forward-slashed, so the stripos does not return 0 (it returs FALSE).

The fix is:

Line 835: if(stripos(preg_replace(“/\\\/”, “/”, $real), $this->docRoot) === 0) {

This solved the issue in my machine.
